Denmark: My favourite destination and why you should go there!

Favorite Destination - Denmark - Scandinavia - Travel Blog - Ribe

I never really even thought of Denmark growing up, I knew that I had to be able to point it out on a map during my school days but really that was about all. But when I was old enough and moved to Whistler, I met some danes. They were the first danish people I knew and well, most of you probably know that I am still with one of those danes today. So since 2008 I have had the pleasure of living there and visiting a few times as well.

So I like to think I have been able to see and experience quite a bit of Denmark and I must say it is a beautiful country with beautiful people. And despite what you might think, it actually is quite a diverse place with lots to offer.

So here is 20 reasons why I love Denmark and why you should visit.

Favorite Destination - Denmark - Scandinavia - Travel Blog - Nyhavn
1. Copenhagen - The capital of Denmark is Copenhagen (København) and it is a big beautiful city. The city has so much to offer and see. Beautiful building, people, ocean and some of the best restaurants and shopping in the world.

2. Nyhavn - One of the best sights to see in Copenhagen is Nyhavn. Colorful, picturesque building along a canal and you can hop on a boat tour from there. It’s in an entertainment area with tons of restaurants and bars but my favourite things to do is to just sit on the canal staring at the amazing view. Also Hans Christian Andersen (know for his fairy tales like the Little mermaid) lived in one of these building.

3. Strøget - Also in Copenhagen, it is one of the longest shopping streets in Europe. A free from cars shopping area with some of the best shopping in the world. Luxury, danish classics, fast fashion, all the best stores are here. And 2 huge department stores that have even more. Restaruants and tons of cute, cozy, quite places all around once you leave the main street.

4. Aarhus - The second largest city in Denmark. It is a huge university city with tons of young people. Lots of great bars, restaurants, shopping available, you are sure to have a great time in this city.

5. Christiania - Freetown Christiania is a green, car free neighbour in Copenhagen that is completely independent of the Danish government. Started by some hippies in 1971 who occupied the old abandoned barracks and developed their own society. It is a very interesting and surprising place to find in the middle of the city. Definitely a must see just so you can get a better understanding of what it is like there.

6. Viking history - Danes use to be viking and you can visit sites and museums all over the country with tons of stuff showing this history of theirs. It’s quite interesting stuff. I have been to the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum (vikingeskibsmuseet) and to the Jelling Monuments.

7. Skagen - Your probably thinking of the watches but no, I am talking about a town in Denmark. Which is along a narrow strip of land at the most northern part of Denmark making this the most northern town. This is the cutest little town with adorable old yellow houses and a huge fishing harbour. It is a must see in my opinion which leads me to my next one.

8. Grenen - If you keep going a bit passes Skagen then you will hit what seems like the end of earth. This northern tip is a huge beach where the North sea and the Baltic sea crash into each other. It is a beach like no other, such a beautiful spot.

9. Raabjerg Mile - Now some of these northern ones you will need a car to get to them but they are worth it. This is a huge moving sand dune. I know, I never thought that Denmark would have an area that is like a desert but it is and it's an impressive site to see.

10. Rubjerg Knude - I have to say, this was another favourite, it almost seems surreal. Also located on the north west of Denmark there is a light house situated by a cliff has been taken over by sand.

11. Klitmoeller - Probably one of the last things you would think you can do in Denmark is surf but you can. Klitmoeller again is on the west coast of the main part of Denmark, Jutland. And is actually one of Europe’s  premier surfing destinations. When I was their, there was also tons of wind surfers as well.

12. Kronborg Castle - Not only is it a beautiful castle but it is a UNESCO World Hertiage Site. You can take a tour of the castle and just across a small distance of ocean you can wave over to Sweden.

13. Ribe - Ribe is the oldest town of Denmark and Scandinavia for that matter. And still has tons of that charm so walking those the old town is like going back in time. In 2014 this town won for best small town destination and the Stork’s that in habit there during certain times of the year bring people from all over.

14. The Palm beach - I have talked about this beach before but seriously it is like you stepped out of Denmark to some tropical Island. It is in the least expected place, so if you find yourself in the North east part of Jutland, Denmark during the summer. It is a perfect place to spend the day at the beach.

15. West coast and War History - If you are into world war two history or even if your not, you can find bunkers all over the west coast and northern part of Jutland. It is quite fascinating and sad to hear about all the things that went on and to see some of the building left behind. And if thats not your things then you can just enjoy the amazing beaches all along there.

16. Tivoli - I love Tivoli and if you haven’t heard of it. It is a beautiful amusement park right in the middle of Copenhagen. Not only are there tons of fun rides but great places to eat and picturesque buildings. I could spent a lot of time there. Some of the taller rides, like the swings can give you an amazing view of the city.

17. Aros - Back in Aarhus, they have an amazing art museum, one of the biggest’s in Europe. I am usually not one for art museums but this one is really good. Tons of exhibits in a very cool building which is definitely instagram worthy. After you have gone all the way up through it all then you can head to the roof where you can walk through the rainbow panorama and enjoy a view of the city.

18. Amalienborg - Amalienborg is located in Copenhagen and is the winter home of the Danish royal family. It consists of four identical palaces facing a courtyard and at noon you can watch the changing of the guards.

19. Den Gamle By - I have only been there during Christmas but I sure can recommend it. I loved it. Den Gamle By means “The Old Town” and its liking walking through history. Found in Aarhus, it is a live village, everyone is character with little shops, gorgeous old buildings, history to learn and traditional food to eat. When we were there during Christmas we ate æbleskrewers, drank warm apple cider and enjoyed the Christmas spirit of the old town. I definitely recommend seeing this during the Christmas season.

20. Den Blaa Planet - Visit Denmark’s National Aquarium. Northern Europe’s biggest Aquarium with tons to see. The newly built Aquarium is a architectural landmark to Denmark and is located in Amager which is a short train ride from central Copenhagen and close to the airport.

Alright, I could keep going as to why I love Denmark and things to do and see but I will stop there. This small country has so much to offer and maybe once I have discovered more for myself, I will do another post like this.

You can find more information on all of these places on the internet and I have left a couple links to some places myself. Some of these photos are quite old and taken with an old camera so, sorry for some of the bad quality images.

I hope you enjoyed this post and that it helps if you are planning or have been thinking about travelling there. Please do, I mean it has also been named one of the happiest countries as well, so why wouldn’t you want to go.
